NS4660 Seminar on Asia in World Affairs

Advanced study of Asia's contemporary economic, security, diplomatic, and cultural roles in world affairs, with special emphasis upon the policy interaction of China, Japan, India and other key states with the United States, Russia, Europe and the developing world.

Course Learning Outcomes

• Identify the main trends driving Asia’s importance to the world today.
• Understand the historical constraints and influences on contemporary Asian affairs as they affect global affairs.
• Describe the primary drivers of conflict within Asia, as well as sources of restraint and stability, and the implications of them for world affairs.
• Evaluate the relative importance of those drivers through use of a range of social scientific methodologies.
• Apply elements of a variety of international relations theories and historic perspectives to the region.
• Assess alternative policy options for the United States and other countries.
• Develop recommendations at the geostrategic level of policy.
