NS4580 U.S. Security Cooperation in the Developing World

NS4580 analyzes historical and contemporary problems in US military engagements in the developing world, from basing to multilateral exercises to arms sales. It focuses on extracting usable lessons for enhancing security cooperation effectiveness both for the United States and for partner nations in Africa and Latin America, and on preparing Foreign Area Officers for successful defense diplomacy.

• Develop mastery of the US role in connection with security predicaments and progress in the Southern Hemisphere and the Global South.
• Analyze a specific problem or episode of US security cooperation relevant to your personal or professional interests, which will also build and showcase your analytical and advisory capabilities.
• Deepen primary regional security expertise in either 683/Western Hemisphere or 681/Africa, and to contextualize it with generalized knowledge on functional problems of security cooperation and with an introduction to specific cases in the other region.
