NS4326 Social Mobilization and Conflict in the Middle East and Africa

This course analyzes the organization, incentives, and goals of non-state actors. Subjects include protest and mobilization of civil society and their relations with violent actions, how available alternatives shape the form that opposition action takes, and the effects of repression and political inclusion.

Prerequisite

Prior completion of at least one 3000-level Middle East Course, or permission of the instructor

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

·      Identify popular grievances that spur mobilization

·      Delineate the trajectory of opposition non-state actors

·      Identify likely tactical and organizational responses by non-state groups to political repression or inclusion

·      Be able to place protests in context of larger social movements and the trajectory of state-opposition relations

·      Define the outcomes and likelihood of state and non-state use of violence

·      Place nonviolent revolutions in their historical and state-level context
