NS3663 Government and Security in Korea

An examination of the division of the Korean nation into two states; the aftermath of the Korean war; domestic political, economic and social problems of North Korea and South Korea; the prospects for reunification; the military balance and the changing strategic environment; and the relations of Pyongyang and Seoul with their key allies. Includes an examination of U.S. relations with Korea. PREREQUISITE: None.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

·       identify factors that helped establish and currently support or weaken the current DPRK regime.

·       explain how ROK democracy is shaped by its pre-democratic history.

·       describe the major governmental structures and patterns of political competition and control found in the DPRK and ROK, respectively.

·       describe how domestic politics help shape foreign and security policy (to include inter-Korean and unification policy) in both the DPRK and ROK.

·       among and within these subject areas, identify areas of current analytical consensus vs. debate.
