NS3320 US Foreign Policy in the Middle East

The course reviews the historical background and current status of American interests and policies in the Middle East. The course focuses on how different U.S. administrations in the post-World War II era defined American interests in the Middle East, and on the major policies enacted to pursue those interests. PREREQUISITE: None.

Course Learning Outcomes

·       Understand the relationship between different eras in US foreign policy: the Cold War; Post Cold War, and post 9/11 eras.

·       Understand the evolution of U.S. foreign policy objectives in the Middle East through these periods.

·       Effectively employ theories of international relations to understand the policies pursued across these eras.

·       Understand the legal and regulatory framework in the United States that governs the execution of policy.

·       Think critically about the marketplace of ideas surrounding foreign policy in the unsettled arguments over the best/most appropriate foreign policy to pursue in the Middle East.
