NS3601 History and Cultures of Southeast Asia

This course addresses the historical development of the peoples of mainland and island Southeast Asia from their origins to the end of the nineteenth century. It focuses on the political, military, social and economic development of these societies and on their belief systems, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam. PREREQUISITE: None.

Course Learning Outcomes

Students will learn to:

  • identify social, economic, and political developments in Southeast Asian history, with an emphasis on the period since the 1800s;
  • develop an understanding of the people, processes, and ideas that shaped the region over the last two centuries;
  • describe the emergence of nationalist movements, the decline of colonialism, and the development of independent countries, and explain differences in these phenomena across the region;
  • become familiar with contemporary debates in Southeast Asia about how to remember and interpret the past; and
  • develop graduate-level oral and written communication skills.
