Examination of the world economy. Focuses on implications for the United States over changes in the world trading and financial systems. Topics covered include trade patterns, economic integration, trade blocs, new international economic order, and international economic organizations. PREREQUISITE: None.

Course Learning Outcomes

Students in this course will develop a broad theoretical and historical understanding of:

·      Liberal and non-liberal economic theories and economies;

·      The nature and importance of interdependence for economic power;

·      Systems of global trade, finance, production and supply chains, and

·      Different pathways of economic development;

·      The United States’ role in the making and unmaking of the multilateral post-WWII order;

·      The causes and consequences of global financial crises, recessions and depressions

·      How to assess the global distribution of economic interdependence and power among the United States and other countries.

·      Challenges to the contemporary world globalized economy and their consequences
