Course Learning Outcomes

• Analyze primary sources in the form of significant texts and interpret secondary literature in the frame of historiography, i.e. the scholarly study of history.
• Assess in sufficient detail the leading issues of nation, state, society, economy, culture, war, and peace as relevant to service in military organizations in the formulation and execution of the foreign and defense policy of the United States, its allies, and friends.
• Evaluate the character of society and state in old regime Europe, especially as concerns the first and second estate and the implications for the present and future.  Understand the statement: Estate and class differ from one another; and also appraise the role of this process in European politics and society.
• Develop compelling periodizations of European history from the close of the early modern period to the advent of so-called contemporary history—beginning with an assessment of the prevailing paradigms.
• Adjudge organized violence as a feature of politic, society, and culture in modern Europe.
• Correlate leading events, personalities, places, and things connected to the transition from the 19^th century to the 20^th century in the European state system, with due attention to the respective national experiences.
