ME4301 Additive Manufacturing

Additive manufacturing (AM) approaches are replacing traditional manufacturing methods that support DoD/DoN to reduce lead times and cost, while increasing resource utilization and performance. This course introduces AM systems and their applications through lectures and laboratory work. Students learn the history, science, and technology behind AM systems and how they can be applied to solve DoD/DoN challenges.

Course Learning Outcomes

  • Explain additive manufacturing (AM) history, process flow, procedures and materials.
  • Describe major types of AM methods, applications and their strengths and limitations.
  • Utilize AM software and equipment to produce manufactured parts required for builds.
  • Understand material interactions with electromagnetic radiation and describe major types of AM diagnostics.
  • Identify and solve a DoD/DoN problem through the use of AM and provide a solution software or build actual part.
