Brief Overview

This program empowers defense managers with basic tools to use data in decision making and an understanding of how data creates value in defense organizations. It develops students’ data literacy and technological agility, enabling them to do basic descriptive and prescriptive analytics with available tools and to better manage data-intensive projects and processes. Students learn concepts underlying complex databases and algorithms in machine learning, and skills required to conduct basic analyses using data, as well as how to identify and collect data that is informative for a given managerial context. Mathematical literacy is a requirement for entry, but no prior probability, statistics, use of statistical software or programming is required.

Convenes

Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer

Program Length

9 months

Outcomes

Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • retrieve, combine, clean, transform and organize data, create visualizations and build statistical models with up-to-date platforms and tools;
  • understand what makes data suitable for addressing a given managerial decision, evaluate a data set or collection plan, and develop a data collection plan;
  • understand the basic structure of relevant models, ranging from regression to neural networks and large language models;
  • determine which types of models are appropriate to a given managerial decision, and build, compare models, and select and implement an appropriate model;
  • discuss the above in the common terminology of data analysts and communicate the results of data analyses and implications for decisions in non-technical managerial terms.
