MN4450 Defense Logistics Strategy

This capstone course examines how logistics and supply chain planning enable strategic defense objectives. Building on prior coursework, it emphasizes logistics as a strategic capability and explores both established and emerging practices through critical analysis of cost, risk, and effectiveness. Students will apply their knowledge in time-sensitive case studies, developing and advocating alternative strategies to meet evolving institutional goals.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Evaluate strengths and risks of various logistics strategies based on the people and materiel to be moved, transportation methods, and supply network characteristics and external constraints
  2. Evaluate various stock positioning strategies, assess the relationship between stock positioning and transportation planning, weigh the impact of warehousing decisions on inventory requirements, and evaluate the operational implications of warehouse placement, configuration and materiel handling policies
  3. Appraise different approaches to mitigating or minimizing risks and uncertainty in the logistics environment; estimate the costs of uncertainty in the logistics environment
  4. Weigh costs and benefits of various logistics strategies
  5. Design models to solve problems related to course learning outcomes
  6. Develop and advocate recommendations to address and improve emergent logistics issues
