PH1322 Electromagnetism

Basic electromagnetism: electric charge, electric and magnetic fields, forces on charges in fields, electric potential, Gauss's law, Ampere's law, Faraday's law, resistance, capacitance, inductance, DC and AC circuits, magnetic properties of matter, transient currents in circuits, Maxwell's equations, electromagnetic waves.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

·       Calculate Coulombic forces between charges.

·       Apply Gauss’s law to electric field calculations.

·       Understand electric potential and energy concepts.

·       Analyze circuits with resistors, capacitors, and inductors.

·       Grasp energy storage and dissipation in circuits.

·       Calculate Lorentz forces acting on charges.

·       Utilize Biot-Savart and Ampere’s laws for magnetic field calculations.

·       Analyze magnetic induction with Faraday’s law.

·       Study the behavior of AC circuits.

·       Understand Maxwell’s equations.

·       Derive the electromagnetic wave equation from Maxwell’s equations.
