OS3605 Introduction to Data Analytics for Cost Estimators

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to data analytics, focusing on key concepts and practical skills related to machine learning, artificial intelligence, programming languages such as R and Python, and state-of-the-art DOD data platforms for automating and visualizing data-related tasks. Students will gain a better understanding of the various aspects of data analytics, including data curation, web scraping, data preparation, cleaning, merging, and predictive modeling and how these techniques can be applied in the cost estimating field. The course will also show students how to use data to provide better decision advantage when briefing senior leadership on their cost analysis.

Course Learning Outcomes

·       Understand the fundamental concepts and principles of data analytics.

·       Gain practical knowledge of machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques and how they can alleviate time consuming cost estimating tasks.

·       Develop an appreciation for using R and Python programming for data analytics.

·       Identify skills required for data curation, web scraping, and data preparation, cleaning, and merging.

·       Explore advanced toolsets (i.e., ADVANA, VAULT, and Vantage) offered by the Department of Defense that enhance automation in data-related tasks.

·       Apply predictive modeling techniques to extract meaningful insights from data using real life case studies from the Pentagon.
